Is Your Laptop Running Slow? Here Is Why and How to Fix It

A laptop that used to run fine and now crawls through basic tasks is one of the most common complaints we hear. The good news is that in most cases it is completely fixable. Here are the top reasons laptops slow down and what to do about each one.

1. Too Many Startup Programs

Every program that launches on startup steals RAM and CPU before you have even opened a browser. Open Task Manager, go to the Startup tab, and disable anything you do not need launching automatically. This alone can shave 30 to 60 seconds off your boot time.

2. You Are Running on a Traditional Hard Drive

Most budget laptops from 2015 to 2020 shipped with spinning hard drives. These are dramatically slower than SSDs. If your laptop has an HDD, upgrading to an SSD is the single biggest improvement you can make, often cutting boot times from 3 minutes to under 20 seconds.

3. Malware Running in the Background

Malware, adware, and browser hijackers quietly consume CPU and RAM in the background. If your laptop is running hot and slow even when idle, this could be the culprit. Run a full Malwarebytes scan and check Task Manager for any suspicious processes.

4. Thermal Throttling from Dust Buildup

Laptops pull in air to cool the CPU, and over time dust clogs the vents and heatsink. When the CPU overheats, it slows itself down to prevent damage. A professional cleaning can restore full performance on a machine that has been struggling for months.

5. You Need More RAM

Running Chrome with 15 tabs, Spotify, Zoom, and a document open at the same time on 4GB of RAM will bring any laptop to its knees. If your system frequently maxes out RAM, a 16GB upgrade is one of the best investments you can make.

  • Check Task Manager by pressing Ctrl+Shift+Esc to see what is consuming your resources
  • Keep your storage at least 15 percent free, since low disk space slows everything down
  • Run Windows Update regularly, as outdated drivers can cause performance issues
  • Consider a fresh OS install if the laptop is several years old and still sluggish after everything else
